Glossary

Biodynamic Literally, this means Life (Bio) + Movement (Dynamic). Biodynamics is the doctrine of vital force, or of the action of living organisms.

Biofeedback A technique in which information is gathered about the normally unconscious functions of the body.

Holistic Medicine A form of health therapy aimed at treating the whole person - body, mind, spirit and emotions - not just the part or parts of the body in which symptoms occur. Holistic Medicine aims to restore the balance between the inner self and the environment without resort to prescription drugs or surgery.

Homeostasis A dynamic process of the body's self regulation mechanisms, giving optimum health.

Massage Rubbing and kneading of areas of the body, mainly by using the hands. Massage increases blood flow, reduces deep-seated pain by causing counter-irritation of nerve endings in the skin, relaxes muscles, and increases the suppleness of the skin.

Therapy Any curative treatment for physiological and mental inbalance.

Peristalsis Wave-like motion of smooth muscles in the digestive tract. This rhythmic (but involuntary) contraction and relaxation of the muscles is responsible for moving food and waste products through the body.

Psycho-peristalsis The means by which the body discharges residual tensions through the digestive tract. For example a shock can elicit immediate unconscious responses of fear, sweating and quickened heart rate; even diarrhoea can occur as a result of over-active peristalsis - all of which are determined by the para-sympathetic nervous system, but can be brought into consciousness.
